The Feather River Rail Society of Portola, California is an educational and historical preservation organization that is the owner and operator of the Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola. The primary mission of the Feather River Rail Society is to preserve the Western Pacific Railroad, with a secondary mission to preserve subsidiary and interchange railroads within the territories Western Pacific served.
The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is the largest single generator of tourism revenue in Plumas County, but it gets very little assistance from the local government or businesses, with the exception of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Society needs to improve our relationship with the local city government, make strong connections with state representatives and make connections with businesses that can aid its mission.
The Society's goals are to increase visitors and membership, bringing more revenue to the community and the Society, and achieve other assistance, such as aid from the city government in the acquisition of critical land now slated for development adjacent to its museum property. The CP team would address these issues and make recommendations for how to achieve its goals, enabling the museum to continue to operate.
The Feather River Rail Society does not meet CP's minimum criteria for budget or staff size. However, we accept requests from these nonprofits from time to time because we believe there are alumni who would enjoy working with small nonprofits focused on sectors that might be of special interest to alumni, in this case railroads, and could make a significant contribution to their progress.
