American Land Conservancy
Help this land conservation agency develop a new revenue model.
American Land Conservancy, founded in 1990, works in partnership with communities, landowners, non-profit organizations, corporations and public resource agencies to conserve wildlife habitat, open space, working farms and ranches, and other natural resources. ALC achieves its mission primarily through land acquisitions and conservation easements, but also pursues other conservation agreements and occasionally engages in habitat restoration and stewardship projects. To date, ALC has completed more than 350 projects across the United States and has protected more than 250,000 acres. ALC's project costs are reimbursed when land transactions close. This funding source is erratic because these transactions can take 1-3 years to complete. ALC is working to diversify its revenue streams by better defining and articulating program goals (for foundations and private donors), creating a membership program, and by greater outreach to private foundations and corporate sponsors.
Although this effort is beginning to bear fruit, these alternate sources have not generated sufficient revenue to counteract the erratic nature of the land transaction revenue. ALC has asked for a CP team to analyze ALC's mission and programs with a creative eye towards an improved business model.
