Ping Hao, HBSA/NC Chairman, welcomed the roomful of guests and highlighted the HBSA/NC club achievements of this past year and thanked those involved with the organization of the dinner. She gave special thanks to Ben Dubin (HBS'97), Dan Ahn (HBS'97), Phil Sanderson (HBS'97) and Steve Harrick (HBS'97) for their leadership as the dinner co-chairs and helping to raise funds for the HBS Community Partners to enable them to achieve their public service mission by providing pro bono consulting and management assistance to Bay Area non-profit organizations. Dan Ahn then thanked Ping Hao for her efforts as Chairman of the HBSA/NC club and got the dinner talk underway with the introduction of Mark Stevens (HBS'89), a partner at Sequoia Capital and founding investor and current board member at NVIDIA. Mark gave some great insight into the investment process that lead to the NVIDIA seed funding round and some interesting stories from the board of director's point of view over the past 17 years.
Jen-Hsun Huang, the founder and CEO of NVIDIA then took the stage. He gave some great background into the graphics business from the inception of NVIDIA in 1993, through numerous consolidation periods of the market leaders, to NVIDIA now being the clear leader in the graphics process business. Jen-Hsun described at length how the company has managed to embrace the entrepreneur character multiple times as NVIDIA was challenged by the market and competition. He also played a terrific video that showed the NVIDIA technology first hand and how it has evolved over the last 17 years.
Following an excellent talk and question/answer session, Co-Chair Steve Harrick presented Jen-Hsun with the award. Ben Dubin, as the Chairman of the dinner, gave closing remarks and thanked Jen-Hsun and the NVIDIA employees. Ben mentioned that NVIDIA embraces the true spirit of this award. As the 2009 recipient NVIDIA joins the ranks of 30 years of award presentations to outstanding entrepreneurial companies. The first Entrepeneur Company of the Year award was presented to HUME and the dinner was chaired by Bill Draper (MBA'54), who was in the audience.
